Gucci Spring 2010

In their Spring 2010 ad campaign, Gucci doesn't exactly cover any new ground: Natasha Poly, bamboo arms, Mediterranean tans. And yet. I want to go to there.

J'Adore

h, Paris! Charlize Theron would look great wearing the Gucci 2941 sunglasses no matter what, but there's something about the light in Paris that makes the image spectacular.

I've been a big fan of these Gucci 2941/S for quite a bit of time now. They're available at thesunglasshouse.com for $200.

Shiloh's Got Competition on the Way

e've discussed Angelina Jolie's Gucci 2785 sunglasses before, but I can never refuse a shot of that fantastic progeny.

Flying Jolie

eviewing many of the photos of the goings and comings of starlets at the New York Fashion Week tents, none seem as effortlessly chic as Angelina Jolie navigating the terminals of Heathrow.

Gucci 2785 aviators are a natural fit for taking to the skies. You can get your own for $175 at PerfumeFreeZone; they retail for $325 elsewhere.

Fresh Blood At Gucci

othing gets my blood going like a fresh advertising campaign. And Gucci's Spring 2008 campaign (which continues the Natasha Poly lovefest) features quite a few new sunnies.

On Ms. Poly, black plastic sunglasses with bamboo horsebit in crystal strass, GG3017/S.

On nameless male model, black plastic and metal sunglasses with Gucci crest on the temples and dark grey lenses, GG1594/S.

On Ms. Poly, black plastic sunglasses with bow on the temples and dark grey lenses, GG3006/S.

On him, black plastic sunglasses with photoengraved semirectangular G on both temples and smoke lenses, GG1586/S.

On her, black metal sunglasses with GG logo in crystal strass and grey lenses, GG2807/S.

On him, black plastic and semimatte black metal sunglasses with dark grey lenses, GG1588/S.

Natasha Poly on Holiday

he Gucci Cruise 2008 Collection is now available in stores and online. Surely, you've seen the ad campaign starring the gape-jawed stunner, Natasha Poly.

It seems Frida Giannini has a bit of a thing for Ms. Poly, who not only stars in the campaign, but also opened and closed the runway show.)

There is already a waiting list for the horsebit pair below on Natasha Poly ("large oval frame sunglasses with horsebit buckle detail and gucci script logo on temple"), which retail for $295.

A-Ok Iek

lthough most of the main runway girls walked in Frida Giannini's Spring 2008 Gucci show, only one made the bookish sunglasses work.

Thank you, Iekeliene Stange.

Milan: III

here are a few constants to runway shows. Miuccia is going to shake things up. LV is going to prominently display gorgeous handbags. Gucci is going to feature big sunglasses. And generally, I am going to love them.

There is something a bit bug-eyed about these shades, no? When Jessica Stam doesn't look good in sunglasses, I can't imagine them selling well.

Alright, Alright Y'all

hat a over-extended long, strange winter break its been! I hope everyone enjoyed their collective holidays and didn't hate me too much in my extended absense. You ready for some shades? There's much to talk about!

The Men's Autumn/Winter 2007 shows are what's finally brought me back to the blog. While man-glass isn't as exciting for me, I love seeing new styles of both sunglasses and clothing.

"With few exceptions, the shows this past week were built around what one might refer to as sober core values," said The New York Times review. Some critcs, however, are less than excited about the shows' return to basics.

Gucci seems to have their eyewear bases covered, with looks ranging from the nerdy to the bold black&white thing we've seen of late.

Of the charmed-life-in-Aspen themed show, the Times could only say:
"Everybody really does look sort of groovy in zillionaire ski bum clothes."
DOLCE & GABBANA

I'd describe this collection as a sartorial mash-up of Buzz Aldrin's & James Bond's professional attire. Style.com said it was a "distinctive hybrid of Stanley Kubrick’s future and David Lynch’s eternal, darkly erotic present."

There's just one pair of shades with varying frames, but that is an improvement on the D&G show, which had every model wearing the same pair of eyeglasses. Overall, a good showing.

PS - I love that their soundtrack featured the 2001: Space Odyssey theme and Justin Timberlake. Now that is what I call a distinctive hybrid.

GIORGIO ARMANI

[Source: Vogue.co.uk]

This return to basic tailoring was a good fit for Mr. Armani. The classic sunglasses shapes look like quality and timeless shades. The Times dug his straight forward show:
Giorgio Armani, for instance, has not often been more in tune with his idiom. The soft suiting and slightly feminized shapes that were his early adaptation to Neapolitan tailoring were, for once, not sidetracked by excursions into stuff that looked like costumes for some imaginary summer in 1920s Biarritz. There was no kooky headgear, no character pastiche.

This week brings the Dior and Valentino shows in Milan. The following week shows continue in Paris. I will be detailing all the flash as I see it.

Angie, Ain't It Good To Be Alive?

hat Angelina Jolie is something else, no?

Her profile in January's Vogue was my favorite (and without a doubt the most highly publicized) cover in quite some time. Just look at her go! She's not dodging the Jennifer Aniston bullet, she's scaring the bejesus out of her interviewer midflight, she's posing for Annie Liebowitz wearing only a cashmere blanket in the desert and she is making it work.

Vogue says:
"...Angelina, the sexy man killer in a pencil skirt, the kind of look that she sports in those fantastic St. John ads. She is wearing a very formfitting white linen Ralph Lauren suit with heels and a great big ol' pair of white-and-silver Gucci sunglasses." [Source: Vogue]

These Gucci 1827 have been on my wishlist for quite some time now. Their aviator shape is nothing new, but they are perfectly designed. They are actually no longer available in Gucci stores, but you can still get them online.

Cost: $227
Colors: Black, Violet, Navy, Silver, Gold, Tortoise, Green (as seen at left), Blue
Retailer: SunglassesItaly

The interviewer later goes on to describe her daily garb:
"She is wearing her uniform: skinny black slacks with black flip-flops and a black sleeveless jersey V-neck. A pair of aviators hangs in her considerable cleavage. There are lots of silvery rings and a black rubber band around the wrist for when she needs to pull back her hair."

Considerable cleavage! Was that necessary, Vogue? I wonder if they were the same pair of Gucci's. And if she had them polarized to eliminate glare while tooling around in her planes and motorcycles. This is the kind of information I need -- her considerable cleavage is common knowledge!

On Thursday, the Rossdales were photographed in West Hollywood. Its refreshing to see how they almost always have baby Kingston with them, as opposed to other celebrities (ahem, Britney) who are rarely seen with their children.

J.G. in Gucci

ennifer Garner took to the streets of Beverly Hills this weekend and was photographed going to a hair salon. You know you've made it when your highlights are newsworthy.

I'm glad to see she is still sporting her Gucci 1536.

These are my go-to shades! (Booyah.)

I thought it was a bit interesting that the paparazzi photos featured her Lexus' California license plate. (She left the Bentley at home for this outing.)

Harper's Bazaar -- November 2006

finally had the opportunity to catch up on my fashion magazines this weekend, specifically Harper's Bazaar.

In their "What's New: Hottest, Newest, Latest" column they detailed a recent development in designer sunglasses.
"The latest trend in eyewear comes from an unlikely source -- buckles. Fendi's B, Roger Vivier's signature Pilgrim, and Gucci's classic closure have appeared as details on glam oversize sunglasses. Who knew looking chic would be such a cinch?"

Fendi's B Fendi Sunglasses:

Cost: $275
Colors: Black, Dark Brown
Retailer: Saks Fifth Ave.

Gucci's 2591
Cost: $201-206
Colors: Black, Tortoise, Red, Violet, Green, Blue
Retailer: Otticanet.com

The Roger Vivier sunglasses, far less common than the other two pairs, really caught my eye. Katie Holmes was photographed wearing them last month at David Orgell, a jewelry store on Rodeo Drive.

[Source: GossipRocks]

Roger Vivier
Cost: $445
Colors: Red, White, Black, Tortoise (as seen on Ms. Holmes)
Retailer: Saks Fifth Avenue (in stores, not available online)

Additionally, they were recently profiled in Wallpaper:
"It's a risk to refer to Diana Vreeland and Nicole Richie in the same sentence, but Roger Vivier's new sunglasses evoke just that type of icon-inspired elegance that we all wish we could exude everyday. The first frames in the collection boldly show off an oversized, Forties silhouette in your choice of red, black, white and tortoise shell, with Vivier's signature gold buckle adorning each temple in quiet homage. Mysterious, forward, effortless and desirable all at once, what more could a girl ask for?"
